What Is Prostate Cryoablation?
Cryoablation, sometimes referred to as cryotherapy, uses extremely cold temperatures to destroy targeted prostate tissue.
During treatment, specialized cryotherapy probes are precisely positioned within the prostate. The tissue surrounding the probes is cooled to temperatures that destroy cancer cells while allowing the physician to carefully control the area being treated.
Advanced imaging and temperature monitoring help guide treatment and protect surrounding structures.
Three Ways Cryoablation Can Be Used
Primary Treatment
For appropriately selected men with newly diagnosed localized prostate cancer, cryoablation can be used as a primary treatment.
Rather than removing the prostate surgically, cryoablation treats the cancer by freezing and destroying the targeted prostate tissue.

Focal Cryoablation
Treating the Cancer While Preserving More of the Prostate
For carefully selected patients with a localized area of clinically significant prostate cancer, focal cryoablation can target the known cancer while attempting to preserve as much healthy prostate tissue as possible.
Focal therapy is an evolving approach to prostate cancer treatment and is not appropriate for every patient.
Patient selection is critical. Detailed imaging, biopsy results, and an understanding of the location and extent of the cancer are essential when determining whether focal therapy is a reasonable option.
The goal is targeted cancer treatment with preservation of surrounding prostate tissue whenever appropriate.
Salvage Cryoablation
Treatment for Recurrent Prostate Cancer After Radiation
When prostate cancer returns after radiation therapy, treatment options can be more limited and technically challenging. Salvage cryoablation is an established treatment option for carefully selected men whose cancer has returned within or around the prostate following prior radiation treatment.
Cryoablation uses precisely placed probes to freeze and destroy targeted prostate tissue. In the salvage setting, the goal is to treat recurrent cancer while carefully considering the surrounding tissues that have already been exposed to radiation.
Who May Be a Candidate?
Salvage cryoablation may be considered for men with evidence of localized or predominantly prostate-confined recurrent disease after radiation. Careful evaluation is essential to determine whether local treatment is appropriate.
Depending on your individual situation, evaluation may include:

Review of your original prostate cancer diagnosis and radiation treatment

PSA history and PSA doubling time

Prostate MRI

Prostate biopsy to confirm recurrent cancer when appropriate

Why Experience Matters in Salvage Treatment
Salvage cryoablation can be more complex than treating a prostate that has not previously undergone radiation. Radiation can cause changes in the prostate and surrounding tissues, making treatment planning and technical precision particularly important.
With nearly 20 years of experience in prostate cryoablation, I have extensive experience evaluating and treating patients in a variety of clinical settings, including men whose prostate cancer has recurred following radiation.

Not every patient with recurrent prostate cancer is a candidate for salvage cryoablation, and local salvage treatment may not be the best option for everyone.
